China expressed regret that a "civilian" balloon intended for meteorological research had strayed into U.S. airspace after being blown off course, an incident that sparked a political furor in the United States.
Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder called it a Chinese "surveillance balloon," where it was first spotted in Montana, refuting China's statement that it was just a civilian weather airship that had veered off course.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a visit to China that had been expected to start on Friday, calling it a "clear violation" of U.S. sovereignty.
