The stretch of the Ljubljanica between Vrhnika and Ljubljana is a very important and relatively well-researched archaeological site. It was proclaimed a national monument in 2003. The riverbed of the Ljubljanica was first investigated in 1884, when Karl Deschmann, then curator at the Provincial Museum of Carniola (now the National Museum of Slovenia), engaged two divers from Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Navy to survey the riverbed at Vrhnika. This was one of the earliest underwater investigations in Europe.
