The Shinjuku 3D billboard featuring a giant cat has become an iconic attraction in Tokyo's bustling Shinjuku district. Located near the east exit of Shinjuku Station, one of the busiest railway stations in the world, this high-tech digital display spans three floors and uses cutting-edge technology to create a mesmerizing 3D effect.
The billboard showcases a hyper-realistic, larger-than-life calico cat that appears to protrude from the screen, interacting with passersby throughout the day. The feline protagonist is displayed on a curved LED screen measuring 1,664 square feet (approximately 150 square meters), capable of showing 4K resolution images and accompanied by speakers for audio effects.
The cat's behavior changes throughout the day, with animations showing it yawning, napping, and playfully interacting with its environment. The 3D effect is particularly striking due to the curved nature of the LED screen, creating an illusion of depth that makes the cat appear to loom over the street.
Designed by creative production company Omnibus Japan, great care was taken to ensure the cat's movements were as realistic as possible, down to details like pupil dilation. The cat's design also incorporates local elements, such as a black patch shaped like Shinjuku Ward and a collar made from traditional Japanese braided cords.
