The Ford Ranger is back. With a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder and a 10-speed automatic, the littlest Ford pickup (which isn’t so little this time around) is ready to tow and haul more than the competition, and with a lower starting price, too.
Of course, this Ford isn’t really new. It’s been kicking around overseas for years, so even though the Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma are a few years old, they should still be competitive with the Ranger. Ford’s turbocharged EcoBoost engine promises 270 horsepower and 310 pound feet of torque, but the maximum tow ratings are associated with the SuperCab, 6-foot bed, and rear-wheel drive. If you want four-wheel drive and a SuperCrew, the towing figure will drop.
Ford Sync3 offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although Ford’s default graphics package still looks dated. Similarly, an optional Bang and Olufsen stereo should sound great, but the rest of the Ranger’s interior will still say “work truck” louder than it whispers “luxury.”
The Ranger’s strongest selling point is its price, particularly if you’re interested in towing and hauling. With best-in-class numbers at a price more than $10,000 less than the competition, this truck looks ready to dominate fleet sales.
