In Speaking Part 1, you have a high chance being asked about your home or hometown.
The examiner may ask you to talk about the house or apartment you grew up in, live in now, or want in the future.
Because it is likely that you will be asked about today’s topic, please take notes while you watch the video.
Remember, to score highly for vocabulary on your Speaking Exam, you must use interesting, idiomatic language.
For a 7 or higher in vocabulary, you must use some words or phrases that a native speaker would use. Just like the vocabulary in today’s lesson!
Super warm environment- welcoming, comfortable
Comfy cozy- warm, comfortable, snug
Choppy- having a lot of walls and rooms
Open space/open floor plan- not a lot of walls; opposite of choppy
Flowing space- open; the spaces connect to each other well
Green space- area with plants (hanging plants, floor plants, herb garden)
Refurbished- redone; restored to better quality
Secondhand- bought used
Massive windows- large windows for the sun to pour in
When you are describing your space, give a lot of details.
In the video, I describe an authentic Balinese mirror that I bought from an antique shop here in Portland.
Your goal is to use tons of adjectives and details to create an image in the examiner’s mind.
Now it’s your turn!
Use some of today’s vocabulary to describe the home you live in now.
