A 7.5 magnitude earthquake razed Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, to the ground in 2018. The earthquake and the tsunami that followed killed almost 5,000 people. Whole villages were swallowed in by ground liquefaction, where the sediments at or near the ground’s surface lose their strength as a result of the strong ground shakes. Many were buried alive. VWN met with Ista Nur Masyithah to hear her account of this horrific incident.
