Setup: SM7B (+76db gain) / M201 TG (+73db) going into a MixPre3 II - Phantom Power is turned off for both mics.
This video is about comparing 2 excellent dynamic microphones for dialogue/voice over. The Shure SM7B Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone vs the Beyerdynamic M201 TG Hypercardioid Dynamic Instrument Microphone.
Both of these mics are very gain hungry, I used +76db for the SM7B and +73db of gain for the M201 TG. Since I am not doing any post processing to the audio, except for Loudness normalization, I wanted the audio to be loud and legible for the audience/viewers.
Both mics were captured at the same time using a MixPre3 II. This is a very good professional recorder that should not color or taint the audio results. Phantom power was not used for either mic since dynamic mics normally do not require phantom power.
I will be switching back and forth between the 2 mics during the video so you can judge for yourself which mic sounds better to your ears.
SPOILER: Even though I absolutely love the SM7B, the M201 TG would be first choice for the following reasons:
- The M201 TG is only 1/3 the weight of the SM7B making it much easier to put in awkward places and positions
- At only 1/2 lb, the M201 TG is able use cheaper, less bulky mic stands
- The M201 TG is has a hyper cardioid capsule compared to the SM7B cardioid, making the M201 TG better for off axis noice rejection and overall room reverb
- The M201 TG is much smaller in size than the SM7B making the mic much less conspicuous in frame or in a shot
- The M201 TG is also much easier to hide in a shot due to its small size and light weight
- The M201 TG is $100.00 cheaper than the SM7B
- Finally, the M201 TG Sounds just as good as SM7B in my opinion
