I hate graphic design is something I used to often say as I was going through school, because honestly, its hard to be a graphic designer.
I was an extremely active and outdoors oriented person, so when I went to school to become a graphic designer it was a shock to me how much time I had to spend indoors and away from things I loved.
I struggled a lot with anxiety and frustration as a graphic designer and over the next few weeks I want to talk about the importance of good mental health as a graphic designer.
If any of you are struggling with depression as a graphic designer I fully understand. I would often search the web for people in the same boat as me but came up with little to read. I would search topics like:
- How to fight depression as a graphic designer?
- Why do I hate graphic designer?
- How to be an active person and a graphic designer?
- What are the struggles of a graphic designer?
- How to fight the urge to give up as a graphic designer?
- Why is graphic design so hard?
- Is there a link between creativity and depression?
- How do I know if graphic design is right for me?
- How to deal with frustration as a graphic designer?
These are questions I continued to struggle with even after graduating. These questions, about the difficulty and fit of graphic design in my life were not easy to face. Honestly the way to get through it is to just keep creating. Whenever I created I would simply try to make something a fraction better than the time before. sometime it worked, other times I failed miserably.
It is all about the journey in becoming a great graphic designer. A lot of people are not good doctors when they first start out. That is why they give them training wheels for about 8 years. Did you know to go from nothing to solo practicing M.D. can take 10-12 years.
Once I realized this I had to tell myself to quite whining. I thought I was supposed to be the best after I downloaded the Adobe CS2 creative suite back in 2009. Graphic design is a practice, just like the medical field. So if you entered the graphic design industry hoping to learn a few skills and coast the rest of your career, you should just get out now.
Why? Because like an M.D. you are a practitioner. You will be in a constant stage of bettering your skills and learning new technology your entire life. It's what make life exciting.
More on this to come later.
