STORYLINE:
A bomb blast in Afghanistan's capital Kabul wounded the city's chief criminal investigator and killed two of his guards on Wednesday, an official said.
The blast apparently targeted General Ali Shah Paktiawal, the head of criminal investigations for the Kabul police, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.
Paktiawal was investigating the overnight killing of three officers at a checkpoint in Kabul's western outskirts when the blast struck his team, the spokesman said.
The explosion lightly wounded Paktiawal.
AP Television footage showed people gathered at the blast site as the police forces were investigating the area.
One eyewitness said three wounded people were taken away from the blast scene.
Paktiawal is a high-profile police official who visits the scenes of bombings and personally leads raids on Kabul's criminal gangs.
He is protected by a large security detail.
