The journey to nursing school is different for everyone. Some go right after high school, others decide to apply after earning a bachelor’s degree in another field of study. For Erin Celesti, a student in our second-degree ABSN program, it was the latter.
After graduating from college in 2016 with a degree in health sciences, Erin found it difficult to find a job in this field of study. “I was working as a banquet captain and wearing a bow tie. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything productive with my degree. Then I found Xavier. Now I feel like I am going to graduate and get a job.”
But why nursing? As an undergraduate, Erin performed cardiovascular research and spent time shadowing physicians and physician assistants. She said everything was great because it was medicine, but she found it to be very diagnostic.
“We were looking at patients in terms of room numbers, not in terms of people. Nurses are the only ones who look at a patient as a whole person. I really wanted that connection.”
As one of nine students in our inaugural ABSN program cohort, Erin says she chose Xavier because we made it possible for her to earn a BSN from a respected university in 16 months. She also wanted a program that would allow her to start learning in the real world as soon as possible. By choosing our program, she was able to get started on her clinical rotations in week five.
Slated to graduate from the ABSN program in May 2018, Erin said she’ll be proud to call herself a Xavier graduate. “I feel like hospitals will be fighting over me.”
