Today we're going to round up Modo's most popular articles from Q3. We've got five excellent articles to get stuck into, so let's get started. Article number five comes from way back at the start of Q3, where we looked into what battery capacity was built in Q2. More than 413 MW of battery capacity came online back then which made it seem likely that Britain would hit its target of 4 GW by the end of 2023. Although recent delays have made that seem a bit unlikely.
Fourth in our list was our analysis on the balancing mechanism dispatch duration. Even though batteries are well suited to balancing the system, they're currently limited to fifteen-minute dispatches. In turn, that prevents them from being able to access a large proportion of the balancing mechanism volume.
If changes are made, that open up thirty-minute dispatches to batteries, they could compete for more of the volume in the balancing mechanism in theory, which in turn would see their skip rate drop. Third in line, we looked at the growing number of batteries that are willing to forego the balance mechanism completely to allow them to earn more revenue through NIV chasing. Imbalance prices have larger within-day price spreads than the intraday or the day-ahead markets, making it a potentially very lucrative revenue stream.
In second place, we looked at the landscape for battery acquisition in the UK. The main takeaway?
The industry is maturing and as a result, acquisitions are increasingly focused on pre-construction projects.
Our most popular article from Q3 looked into the skip rate of batteries in the balancing mechanism.
At the time of writing, back in July, the average percentage of periods when batteries were in merit, available, not being looked over in favor of system-flagged actions, but still weren't dispatched, was 91%. But with the balancing mechanism event set for next week, as well as the launch of the open balancing platform in December, we'll see whether the outlook for batteries at the end of the year changes to be a bit more positive.
