동아시아 5개국의 춤을 한자리에서 만나다
Traditional dances are often hard to see firsthand... outside the country they originate from.
However, if that's your thing... and are watching us in South Korea,... we have some good news for you.
A special festival is being held in Seoul where people can watch traditional dances from a variety of Asian countries.
Our Kim Bo-kyoung tells us more.
A gorgeous traditional Korean house was the backdrop for dances from across Asia on Wednesday at the Asia Traditional Dance Festival 'RYU'.
"Artists from Japan, Singapore, Mongolia and Vietnam as well as from South Korea... have come to Seoul to show off their countries' traditional dances with original moves of their own."
Traditional Korean performances opened and closed the festival... and performers from other countries also danced to their own local tunes.
Mongolian choreography showed the country's nomadic customs and lifestyle... and the Japanese team showed two shamans dancing to pray for abundant harvests and peace.
"We just performed a Vietnamese traditional contemporary dance. It is all about emotion of people and concerns, that thinking of people between traditional and modern. This is the first time we participated in Asia traditional dance festival and I saw all the performers and they are really talented and passionate, We can see the culture, heritage and passion of them in their performances."
The directors of the festival consider this a very good opportunity to learn about the culture of other regions.... and hope it can have meaning beyond just a unique performance.
"I think the Asian festival has very important role to assemble artists and talents around this region for mutual understanding and respect for what we believe and who we are in terms of culture identity and national representation."
"There haven’t been any festivals where people can see traditional dances from Asian countries. Having traditional dances performed together in one place, especially in Seoul, is very meaningful and we are planning to continue having these kinds of performance organized by the private sector."
The Asia Traditional Dance Festival 'RYU' will be held on December 12th and 13th... at 7:30 p.m. in Sungkyun Theater in Seoul, free of charge.
