The shortest distance between two points on Earth is along a great circle, not a straight line.
A great circle is the largest circle that can be drawn on a sphere, with its center coinciding with the sphere's center.
This concept is critical in aviation and maritime navigation for efficient route planning.
Due to Earth's curvature, following a straight line (in 3D space) doesn't provide the shortest path.
The great circle route is also used in global communication systems for laying undersea cables.
