American politics can be shockingly erratic — how do the same voters back Barack Obama and Donald Trump? But for a century, the New Hampshire primary has been an exception.
Every four years, the Granite State holds the first presidential primary in the U.S., attracting a massive amount of media attention and setting the tone for the campaign(s) to come in the process.
Now, though, the Democratic National Committee is poised to sign on to a big change proposed by President Joe Biden, who wants South Carolina to hold the first primary in 2024 with New Hampshire and Nevada following close behind.
So what happens if New Hampshire, whose first-in-the-nation status is enshrined in state law, flouts the DNC and goes first anyway? In this episode of Talking Politics, Dante Scala of the University of New Hampshire and James McKim of the Manchester Chapter of the NAACP join host Adam Reilly to discuss how the simmering standoff could reshape politics at both the state and national level.
First, though, Reilly is joined by GBH News' Saraya Wintersmith and the Dorchester Reporter's Gintautas Dumcius to discuss a bevy of notable developments in Boston proper, including a new poll showing increasing dissatisfaction with Boston's public schools and a lawsuit challenging the Boston City Council's new redistricting plan.
