(11 Oct 2017) Spain's prime minister and members of parliament were seen departing the country's parliament in Madrid on Wednesday following a debate on Catalonia's independence.
Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Vice President Soraya Saenz de Santamaria and representatives of Spain's Congress of Deputies left the building late in the evening following discussions.
Rajoy addressed the Congress of Deputies - the lower house of Spain's parliament - a day after Catalan officials signed what they called a declaration of independence from Spain.
Rajoy earlier Wednesday demanded that Catalan regional leader Carles Puigdemont clarify if he in fact declared independence Tuesday and intimated Spain might apply a law entitling it to take control of some or all of Catalonia's autonomy if he did.
Puigdemont announced on Tuesday that he was using the victory in a banned Oct. 1 referendum to proceed with a declaration of Catalan independence, but proposed freezing its implementation for a few weeks to allow for dialogue and mediation with the government in Madrid.
