This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. An established dancer and choreographer, Bilqis Hijjas shares how seemingly “good” girl traits can be detrimental to creativity. She challenges girls and parents alike to be unfettered and to jump at opportunities to explore the unknown.

Trained in a wide variety of dance styles including ballet, contemporary, jazz and traditional Asian dances, Bilqis Hijjas currently writes about dance, produces, performs and teaches in Malaysia. Bilqis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies from Harvard University, a masters in applied anthropology from Australian National University, and a Graduate Diploma in Choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.

Bilqis is currently the President of MyDance Alliance, a membership organisation supporting dance in Malaysia. For MyDance she was artistic director of the MyDance Festival in 2011 and 2013, and organises capacity building workshops in choreography, audience development and production for the Malaysian dance community. Bilqis lectures in dance history and criticism at University of Malaya, and writes on dance in the Klang Valley at [ Ссылка ].

Bilqis also directs the dance program at private arts centre Rimbun Dahan, which offers residencies for contemporary dance choreographers. Since 2006, she has produced numerous dance performances at various theatres in Malaysia including at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, The Actors Studio, Penang Performing Arts Centre, Damansara Performing Arts Centre and Fonteyn Studio of Federal Academy of Ballet, as well as the occasional Dancing in Place weekend of site-specific works at Rimbun Dahan.
