Obligate anaerobes are microorganisms killed by normal atmospheric concentrations of oxygen (20.95% O2).Oxygen tolerance varies between species, with some species capable of surviving in up to 8% oxygen, while others lose viability in environments with an oxygen concentration greater than 0.5%.
Aerotolerant anaerobes use fermentation to produce ATP. They do not use oxygen, but they can protect themselves from reactive oxygen molecules. In contrast, obligate anaerobes can be harmed by reactive oxygen molecules.
There are three categories of anaerobes. Where obligate aerobes require oxygen to grow, obligate anaerobes are damaged by oxygen, aerotolerant organisms cannot use oxygen but tolerate its presence, and facultative anaerobes use oxygen if it is present but can grow without it.
Most aerotolerant anaerobes have superoxide dismutase and (non-catalase) peroxidase but don't have catalase.[1] More specifically, they may use a NADH oxidase/NADH peroxidase (NOX/NPR) system or a glutathione peroxidase system.[2] An example of an aerotolerant anaerobe is Cutibacterium acnes.
Facultative anaerobe definition biology- The organisms which can survive in both oxygenated as well as the deoxygenated environment are known as facultative anaerobes. These are the most adaptable organisms that have the capability to switch between aerobic and anaerobic types of respiration.
Microaerophilic bacteria require a reduced oxygen concentration for growth. They have optimal growth in 5-10% oxygen and some species are stimulted by 1-10% carbon dioxide. Bacteria that thrive in the precence of carbon dioxide are called capnophilic bacteria (or capnophiles).
An obligate aerobe is an aerobe that requires oxygen for aerobic respiration. Obligate aerobes need oxygen to oxidize substrates (for example sugars and fats) in order to obtain energy. They use oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor during aerobic respiration
