This is a Morning Walk Tour Here in Intramuros ( Latin : " protective wall " or "within the wall"), is the historic walled city and oldest district of Manila , the capital of the Philippines . It has an Intramuros is also called the Walled City , and during the Spanish period was considered the city of Manila . The call to the outside -wall districts is extramuros , which means “outside the wall”. [3] [4]
The Spanish colonial government began building a defensive wall in the late 16th century to protect the city from invaders beyond. The 0.67 km2 walled city was originally located on the shores of Manila Bay , south of the Pasig River entrance . Fort Santiago is the assigned guardian of the city , whose fort is located at the mouth of the river. Due to land reclamation made in the early part of the 20th century its walls and fortifications retreated from the coast.
Intramuros was completely destroyed due to bombing in the battle to retake the city from Japanese force during World War II . Reconstruction of the walls began in 1951 when Intramuros was declared a National Historic Monument, where it is still carried out to this day by the Intramuros Administration (IA)
In the report Saving Our Vanishing Heritage released by the Global Heritage Fund in 2010, Intramuros was listed as one of 12 places around the world in danger of being destroyed and lost, [5] which noted the non proper governance and development pressure.
