올해 쌀 생산량 386만9천톤...38년 만에 가장 적다

This year's rice production in South Korea fell to its lowest level in 38 years.
According to the Statistics Korea on Tuesday, the projected rice output for 2018 was just less than 3-point-87 million tons, down 2-point-6 percent on-year.
The decrease has mainly been attributed to other crops replacing rice, while extreme heat and frequent rain during the summer also affected production.
Rice is a staple food for Koreans, but its consumption has been declining recently.
Despite this trend, however, the price of rice rose by 29 percent to some 43-point-8 U.S. dollars per 20 kilograms as of Monday, due to the lower supply.
