Porsche is launching its most powerful mid-engined roadster yet, the Porsche 718 Spyder RS, thirty years after the introduction of the Boxster concept car. For the first time, the naturally aspirated engine from the 911 GT3 is being utilized in an open-topped mid-engined sports car. The 718 Spyder RS is the open-top counterpart to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, with a six-cylinder boxer engine producing 368 kW (500 PS) of power and 450 Nm of torque. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 308 km/h.
The 718 Spyder RS is available exclusively with Porsche's dual-clutch transmission (PDK), offering lightning-fast gear shifts and maximum performance. The car weighs 1,410 kg, 40 kg less than the 718 Spyder with PDK and 5 kg lighter than the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Aerodynamically, the car features a wide air outlet, NACA ducts for brake cooling, and sideblades on the bumper for increased downforce. Instead of a wing, the 718 Spyder RS sports a distinctive ducktail-shaped tear-off edge.
The vehicle is equipped with a manually operated single-layer lightweight soft-top, consisting of a sun sail and weather deflector. The sun sail can be used as a 'Bimini top' to protect occupants from intense sunlight. When combined with the weather deflector, the complete top offers effective protection against rain. The entire roof weighs only 18.3 kg, significantly lighter than the roofs of the 718 Spyder and 718 Boxster.
The 718 Spyder RS's chassis incorporates components from the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and the 718 Spyder, providing excellent driving pleasure on winding roads. It comes standard with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), ball-jointed suspension bearings, and 20-inch forged aluminium wheels. The suspension set-up is more relaxed than that of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, giving it a characteristically convertible-style feel.
The interior is minimalist, featuring a Race-Tex-covered RS sports steering wheel with a yellow 12-o'clock marking, lightweight CFRP full bucket seats, and black leather and Race-Tex seat covers. Contrasting color accents in Arctic Grey or Carmine Red are available. The dashboard and trims are also covered in leather. Exterior colors include four plain, three metallic, and three special options.
An optional Weissach Package is available for the Spyder RS, offering lightweight forged magnesium wheels, titanium sports exhaust system tailpipes, and an anti-glare Race-Tex-covered dashboard. Porsche Design Timepieces offers a handcrafted chronograph exclusive to 718 Spyder RS buyers, featuring a titanium case, carbon dial, and vehicle leather strap. The watch's rotor design matches the 718 Spyder RS wheel rim.
The Porsche 718 Spyder RS will make its public debut in June at the 75th-anniversary celebration of Porsche Sports Cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and will also appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. The vehicle promises an unfiltered driving experience with its powerful GT3 engine, close-ratio transmission, lightweight construction, and road-optimized racing suspension.
