Four-time winner of the Juno award as Composer of the Year Jim Vallance joined The Lilacs on stage to perform his 1984 hit “Run To You.” Best known as the songwriting partner of Bryan Adams, Jim has also written for a Who’s Who of pop acts, including Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Prism, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Glass Tiger, Roger Daltrey, Tina Turner, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Europe, Kiss, Scorpions, Rick Springfield, Anne Murray, and Joe Cocker. Vallance is a hell of a drummer, as you can see, and he’s also a good sport, which you can tell by the way he declined to wince at the flatness of the singer’s opening “she” in both verses of this enduring classic. Performed at the International Pop Overthrow festival at Pianos on New York City on Nov. 9, 2019.
Fun Fact #1: According to an interview with Adams in the Malaysia Star, “Run to You” was originally written for Blue Oyster Cult, but they rejected it, so it ended up on Adams’ multi-platinum breakthrough “Reckless” and became a #6 hit on the Hot 100 (#1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Tracks).
Fun Fact #2: Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Dinosour Jr., Folk Implosion) recorded “Run to You” as the lead track on his record “Another Collection of Home Recordings.” He covered it totally straight and admiringly. And his habit of fully pronouncing the present participle added some weirdly addictive resonance – ie “I’m gonna run to you” became “I’m going to run to you.”
