Nájera, one of the towns of the Camino de Santiago in La Rioja, has a long and illustrious history dating back to its foundation by muslims (the name "Najera" means "place among rocks"). After being conquered by the christian king Sancho Garcés I, it became the capital of the kingdom of Pamplone (later Navarre). Later, king Sancho III moved the route of the Camino de Santiago so that it crossed the town, which turned it into a key point of the pilgrimage.
Its main attraction is the monastery of Santa María la Real, which is the burial place of the kings of Navarre.
