(9 Aug 1994) Two thousand ragged paramilitary recruits paraded through the
capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, in a march organized by military
leaders trying to deter a possible U.S. invasion. "We are
preparing the people!" the recruits, from teenagers to people in
their 60s, sang Monday (8/8) as they ran in front of army
headquarters and the presidential palace before practicing
military formations in a downtown park.
