The director general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has urged countries to strive for a fully functioning High Seas Treaty. Also known as the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), this treaty was adopted by the UN in June 2023 and will become an international law once signed and ratified by at least 60 countries. The BBNJ treaty addresses critical issues such as increasing sea surface temperatures, overexploitation of marine biodiversity, overfishing, coastal pollution, and unsustainable practices in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
