At 30 weeks of pregnancy, the fetal spleen ends the production of red blood cells [1]. Bone marrow is now responsible for forming red blood cells [1].
The fetal brain has matured enough to begin organized sleep states with rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep [2]. These sleep states are crucial for developing the visual system [2].
The placenta starts transporting more protein to the fetus [3]. Over the next eight weeks, the fetus will gain about half a pound (227 grams) per week [4]. The placenta will increase in weight by about 50% [3].
