Having taken on an allotment plot, my original thought was that I would just grow Dahlia over there in what would be a bed for cut flowers. I then changed my mind and decided to grow 1 of each variety at home, again, but in containers as I did last year.
Last year, 2021, I only grew a couple of Dahlia in containers, varieties 'Edinburgh' and 'Babette', but they did do very well and provided flower colour throughout summer and into mid/late autumn.
This year I'm growing a lot mare varieties, Ball, Cactus and large Decorative types. Whilst I expect the workload to be greater I'm also hoping that by using a different planting mix to 2021 the plants should produce better flowers, with the soil mix better able to allow the plants to thrive.
The compost mix that I have made is to use 2 bags of Westland Gardeners Choice multi-purpose 60ltr combined with 1 bag of Westland John Innes number 2 which is a loam based product.
Both the compost and John Innes (J.I) have fertiliser content that should last for 5 weeks. Beyond that time then additional feeds will need to be added.
The Dahlia varieties that I'm growing are:
Ryecroft Daves Choice,
Bantling,
Boom Boom Red,
Bishop Of York,
Babette,
Hy Pimento,
Edinburgh,
Winholme Diane,
Rocco,
Marys Jomanda,
Westerton Harry,
Oakwood Goldcrest,
White Alves,
Shirwell Peach,
Almand Climax,
