Do you need a diff lock - either a cross-axle diff lock or a centre diff lock - for true off-road driving?

Here's a typical question from Claus - looking at a GLX Pajero Sport (no cross-axle diff lock a the rear) and GLS (with a rear diff lock) but trying to justify the $5000 price difference between the model grades:
"I need a car that will tow more than 2T so that puts me in the range of the Pajero sport, Trailblazer, MUX, Prado etc. Driven all and quite happy with the Pajero sport, seems the more comfortable on bitumen and good seats. How important is the rear diff lock as the GLX does not have this but $5,000 cheaper than GLS? I do not see myself doing major crazy off-roading. Possibly sand not too difficult tracks." - Claus B
