Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher, novelist, and playwright, born on June 21, 1905, in Paris, and died on April 15, 1980. He is best known as the leading exponent of existentialism in the 20th century. He was a professor of philosophy at Le Havre in 1931 and became a professor at the Lycée Pasteur in Paris from 1937 to 1939. Sartre wrote a number of books, including the highly influential Being and Nothingness. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, but he declined it. He had a relationship with noted intellectual Simone de Beauvoir.
