Research has found that we now spend on average 13 hours a day sitting, whether that be at our desks, in our cars or on the couch.
The problem with sitting for long periods of time is that you naturally begin to slump in your chair, pushing out the natural curve in your lower back and putting strain on the back muscles.
Adopting a correct sitting posture is the simplest solution to reducing these postural stresses and strains. The key is to prevent your lower back from slumping or sagging outwards and this is where the Backboard™ can help.
Used to help correct postural imbalances, the Backboard™ simply slides into the back of your chair, supporting the natural inward curve.
As it pushes your pelvis forward, this helps to put the correct curvature in your spine, encouraging you to sit upright in the correct position and improve your seated posture.
There are a wide variety of lumbar supports on the market today, in all shapes and sizes. This is because everyone has different requirements depending on the shape of their lumbar curve.
Back products must fit your unique anatomy, so some people will need a deeper support while others will need a shallower support.
This is what makes the Backboard™ so unique.
As it can be bent into any position, it can be specifically tailored to fit the curvature of your back.
By applying light pressure, the Backboard™ can be bent to the desired shape and reformed as often as needed. As it retains its form it's ideal for use whenever and wherever you need the support.
It's universal for all chairs and comes with a seat retainer strap meaning you can use it on an office chair, in the car, on the couch or in the garden.
The Backboard™ was developed in conjunction with Harley Street specialists, the London Spine Clinic, a centre of excellence for all spinal care. They recommend using the Backboard™ whenever you are seated to minimise the load on your back and stop prolonged stresses from sitting in a slumped position.
By applying light pressure, the Backboard™ is bent over the knee to the desired curvature. It's then positioned in the small of your back to provide support to the natural curve.
The Backboard™ should feel comfortable and the curve shouldn't push beyond your neutral postures.
Because neutral spinal curves vary in shape from person to person we wanted to develop a product that could be unique to you. That's why we've developed a product that is both adjustable and lightweight, so you can carry it with you to use on any chair and in any location.
The main challenge that we faced during the design process of the Backboard™ was creating something that was stiff enough to support you but still flexible enough that it's customisable to your back.
Our final prototype was made from a robust but lightweight construction that specifically meets these requirements.
After looking at the existing lumbar supports on the market, we also wanted to create something that was stylish and unique in its design.
We have also developed a sleeve to go with the Backboard™, to hold reusable hot and cold pads, which can provide additional therapy to your lower back.
The prototype testing is now complete and our factory is now ready to go into full scale production. The production quantities are based on successful funding from Kickstarter and delivery is scheduled for March 2015.
After many different designs and prototypes we believe we have created the perfect product to help give you great posture when sitting at an affordable price.
We are very close to production and need your help to bring this to market. Our next step is to commit to tooling and production of materials. They will be manufactured here in the UK so you can rest assured that the quality will be excellent.
Risks and challenges
As an experienced team, we are well aware of what it takes to bring a product to market and have already spent many months working to produce a prototype.
We have minimised any potential problems by working closely with our factory, producing pre-production samples and avoiding any engineering problems as these have already been addressed. Our products have also been thoroughly tested by industry professionals at The London Spine Clinic.
We are now ready for the full production run, however should any problems occur we have the experience needed to resolve them and we will communicate frequently with our backers over the course of the campaign and provide updates if there are any delays.
The risks involved are minimised due to Handsome Ltd's existing expertise, industry relationships and success with other products.
