On a journey with a flying legend
DC-3 is the iconic aeroplane that revolutionized commercial flying in the 1930s and 40s. It is the plane considered by many to be the most influential aircraft in the history of aviation.
The first DC-3 rolled off the assembly line of the Douglas factories in Long Beach, California at the end of 1935. This type was soon introduced to commercial routes all over America. In three stops you could now travel from the west coast to the east coast in only 15 hours.
However, trouble lurked ahead and when USA entered the 2. world war, the plane was modified to the military version C-47 Dakota.
We have all seen the images of the invasion of Normandy, where allied troops skydived into France from the C-47 Dakota, or the nearly 1 year long Berlin blockade where the plane helped bring aid to the isolated city.
When production ceased in 1957 more than 16.000 planes had left the factory. The plane was known as one of the most reliable in history, and today more then 200 - 300 planes are still airborne.
OY-BPB is the National ID of the Danish plane but among friends she is known as The Old Lady.
Two Danish organizations are handling maintenance and booking of flights in Denmark.
