2. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Franca Cammarota, protester:
"The police officers involved are between 5,000 and 8,000 and that's okay, but there are so many of them, spreading across the entire area up to 100 kilometers from where the event is taking place, leading to an incredible waste of money. These meetings could be held in appropriate European locations, avoiding all this waste and these galas. That's why we provocatively said, 'to be together, all we need is Mediterranean couscous and our frisa (bagel-shaped toasted roll)."

Here in Brindisi, we can clearly see all the consequences of the climate emergency: the salinization of groundwater, the rising sea levels that are increasingly shrinking the coasts, we experience all this... The drought – last year it rained only once in six months here. None of this will be discussed; they will talk about war, weapons, 'Let's help Ukraine, let's send more weapons to Israel, to Ukraine, etc., etc.', and this is what is not right."

STORYLINE:
Scores of people gathered in the city Brindisi in southern Italy to protest against the Group of Seven (G7) summit taking place at nearby resort of Borgo Egnazia.
As summit leaders made their way to the state dinner at the Castello Svevo, dozens of people took to the streets of the city to voice their opposition to the meeting.
Coordinated by the No G7 group, protesters organized an alternative dinner which they called "The Poor People's Dinner."
“These meetings could be held in appropriate European locations, avoiding all this waste and these galas,” protester Franca Cammarota said.
Young international activists from the Debt for Climate movement also took part in the demonstration and brought a Trojan horse to the town’s square.
"The climate is not one of the topics on the table, they will talk about everything except climate emergencies", said Angelo Gagliani, one of the demonstrators.
"Here in Brindisi, we can clearly see all the consequences of the climate emergency: the salinization of groundwater, the rising sea levels that are increasingly shrinking the coasts", he added.
"None of this will be discussed", Gagliani concluded.
Italy is hosting the summit of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations in the wake of the European Parliament election, which saw a surge in support for the far-right in places like G7 members France and Germany.
