Harvey Smith, President and CEO at Pacific Medical Centers, discuss what he's watching in Washington: population health management. "We need to focus on how to bring a population forward, gain input from communities, and make the goal of a healthy person the focus."
Mr. Smith has been Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Medical Centers since December 2002. Under his leadership the company has grown significantly in both the number of patients served and the type of services offered. During his tenure at PacMed, he has taken a leadership role in raising the quality of care delivered to every patient, providing exceptional service without regard for payer type, and the company’s quality of care has become one of the highest in the region. Technical and work flow innovations have improved the effectiveness of PacMed physicians while keeping healthcare costs for commercial patients among the lowest in the area.
Mr. Smith started his career in a Hawaii based Fortune 500 oil company working mostly in organizational restructuring and start ups. After 14 years in the oil industry, he joined Kapi’olani Hospital for Women and Children and spent the next 14 years building an integrated healthcare system based on the medical home model. In his work on state health policy, Mr. Smith introduced the principles of Healthy People 2000 into the core delivery model statewide.
