(7 Oct 2014) Shuji Nakamura, one of three Nobel Prize winners in Physics this year, demonstrated his winning invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LED) at a press conference in Goleta, California on Tuesday .
Nakamura said he was "happy to see that my dream of LED lighting has become a reality."
"Nowadays we can buy energy efficient light bulbs in the supermarket and help a reduced energy use. I hope this helps to reduce global warming too," said Nakamura, who is a Japanese-born American.
Nakamura and his two fellow Nobel prize winners - Japanese researchers Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano - invented a new kind of light-emitting diode (LED) in the 1990s.
LED are now pervasive - helping create the glowing screens of mobile phones, computers and televisions - and experts say their use will only grow.
The three Nobel Prize winners will be presented with their awards in Stockholm in December.
