During the Second World War, there were many people who collaborated with the Germans in France. Some women were forced to undergo the Ugly Carnival for their liaisons with German soldiers, and they had their heads shaved. But one First World War veteran who rose to power was Joseph Darnand, who became the leader of the Milice, the French militia who were opponents of the French Resistance.

Darnand would collaborate with the Germans and his actions were responsible for the slaughter and deportations of hundreds if not thousands. But at the end of the war, he would try to flee but was captured and he was then sentenced to death and was taken to a firing range. He was executed by a firing squad and this brought an end to the life of a former SS member, and high ranking French Nazi collaborator.
