Katie Couric spoke with Dr. Reed Tuckson, the President of the American Telemedicine Association, and a former Commissioner of Public Health for Washington, D.C. who helped launch the Black Coalition Against COVID-19 ([ Ссылка ]) to help dispel distrust around vaccinations in general, but specifically the COVID-19 vaccines being distributed across America in the current pandemic.
Dr. Tuckson discusses the origins of the distrust of the public health systems in America, notoriously the Tuskegee Syphilis Study as well as the misuse of the genetic material of Henrietta Lacks. He also talks about the broad efforts that many groups, including his own organizations, are taking to help educate and rebuild trust in the health care system in Black communities, and points to the involvement of Black medical professionals in the development of the COVID-19 vaccines as well as Black medical professionals in high profile, high visibility positions in many public health organizations as a reason the efforts are gaining traction.
