An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 shook Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia on Friday, January 15, 2021.
President Visits Mamuju Refugee Command Post and Ensures Aid for Earthquake Affected People
The President ensured that the central government would provide assistance by rebuilding collapsed government buildings so that public services could resume running.
After inspecting the West Sulawesi Governor's Office which was damaged by the earthquake and resulted in the cessation of local government services, President Joko Widodo arrived at the Manakarra Stadium, Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi.
At that location, the Head of State wanted to ensure immediately that the evacuation and assistance provided to residents affected by the earthquake had gone well.
"I came to ensure that the evacuation process, assistance to the community, logistics for refugees, and refugee tents are well managed. This is what I want to confirm by coming here, ”he said at the Manakarra Stadium, on Tuesday, 19 January 2021.
During his visit to Mamuju Regency, the President witnessed firsthand the huge impact caused by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on Friday (15/1) that hit Mamuju and Majene Regencies.
The President ensured that the central government would provide assistance by rebuilding collapsed government buildings so that public services could resume running.
"Earlier I told the governor that government buildings collapsed. After being audited, the central government will soon rebuild," said the President.
The Head of State also expressed his deep condolences for the victims of the earthquake disaster. The President prays that the families left behind will be given patience and fortitude.
“I would like to express my deep sorrow for the victims of approximately 80 people who died who have been found. Hopefully those who are left behind will be given sincerity and patience, "
To note, Manakarra Stadium is currently being converted as a place of refuge for residents affected by the earthquake. A number of tents were erected to accommodate residents while observing health protocols.
After inspecting the evacuation posts, the President also stopped at a residential location not far from the Manakarra Stadium where many houses collapsed due to the earthquake. The Head of State had a chance to chat with a resident whose house was also heavily damaged.
When delivering a statement at the evacuation post, the President explained that the central government would provide assistance to repair houses for residents who were damaged.
"For collapsed houses, the government will help for heavily damaged Rp. 50 million, Rp. 25 million moderate, and Rp. 10 million lightly damaged,"
