Its been over 30 years since Freddie Mercury died of complications resulting from AIDS. Following his tragic death, most of his possessions were destroyed.
Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar in 1946 to Parsi-Indian parents, who raised him in Zoroastrianism. According to World Religion News, Mercury’s parents devoutly practiced their religion, while Mercury himself was a bit more private about his beliefs. Despite this, Mercury is said to have retained some of his Zoroastrian beliefs, with a Zoroastrian priest officiating his funeral.
The burning of Freddie’s belongings was in accordance with Zoroastrianism.
One thing that was not burnt was Mercury’s stamp collection. Joanna Espin, Curator of The Postal Museum, said that “When Freddie Mercury passed away, a lot of his belongings were burnt in accordance with his family’s religious beliefs. One of the reasons we think this (album) wasn’t destroyed upon Freddie’s death was because the stamps had originally come from his father.”
Being one of the only surviving possessions of Freddie Mercury makes the stamp collection absolutely rare and special.
