A few weeks ago I set out to try and locate some of the wild Mexican gray wolves of Arizona in the eastern part of the state in the White Mountains. Finding wolves is never an easy task, especially when the wolves I am after are endangered, with fewer than 100 in the wild of Arizona. About 10 years ago I fell in love with these endangered wolves, and began producing a film about them. Little did I know it would launch me into a career as a wildlife filmmaker. Mexican gray wolves are the only wolves known to exist in Arizona, and once ranged all throughout the southwest from the Four Corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and even ranging all the way down to central Mexico and Texas. Some suggest they even existed in Southern California. But today, and after years of hard work and reintroduction efforts, roughly 200 Mexican gray wolves exist in the wilds of Arizona and New Mexico, with roughly 40 in Northern Mexico (as of the 2021 population survey).
THE FILM I PRODUCED ON WOLVES:
In 2017 I released a film I produced on the Mexican gray wolf called "Gray Area: Wolves of the Southwest" that won over 15 awards, including Best Feature Film, and Best Documentary Feature and has screened around the world.
