During the second EVA at Shorty Crater astronauts Schmitt and Cernan were collecting soil samples. While collecting the material for bag 509 they noticed that there was orange soil between 2 to 3 inches below the surface.
Further examination of the soil samples, conducted on earth, revealed that they were very small, spherical beads of colored glass. Rich in titanium and low in silica and with the intensity of the orange color apparently related to the titanium/iron ratio. The Beads of glass were theorized to be the result of volcanic activity.
