How was this home insurance claim denied? This homeowner filed a claim after a storm dropped tennis ball sized hail on his metal roof.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the first claim for this roof. The insurance claim history is as follows...
IN 2017 - this roof had a Spanish Barrel clay tile roof, which got destroyed by 110-mph winds. The owners opted to install a premium metal tile roof instead of clay tile.
IN 2018 - A year later, the metal roof was hit by baseball sized hail, which totaled it. The insurance company paid to replace it and the homeowners had the same material installed. Then they sold the house.
IN 2020 - another hail storm with tennis ball sized hail hit the house and after discussing what the new homeowners should do, we advised them to not install a metal roof. Their insurance company initially denied paying the full amount to replace their roof, but after much discussion with them they ultimately agreed that the amount of our estimate was correct and paid for the replacement in full.
The homeowners chose to install a polymer composite material instead of go back on with metal.
The insurance claim was less than half what was needed to do this project. I get that. Those things happen. If the adjuster doesn't know about the material and labor costs, of course his estimate will be too low.
But then the insurance company tried every trick to avoid increasing the claim amount to where it needed to be. The adjuster wanted to save the insurance company more than half the cost of a $50,000 roof.
