A new law bans unexpected medical bills starting this month.
Advocates say consumers should still watch for these charges and know what to do if they do.
National Patient Advocate Foundation spokeswoman Caitlin Donovan said providers won't write "Surprise!" on illegal bills.
"Patients must determine when new protections apply."
Before this year, if you went to a hospital where the anesthesiologist wasn't in your health plan's network, you could have been charged thousands of dollars.

Balance billing is when insurers offer partial out-of-network coverage and leave the patient to pay the rest. Out-of-network costs aren't always covered.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, one-fifth of private insurers' emergency claims include out-of-network bills.
The No Surprises Act bans out-of-network charges.
Karen Pollitz, a senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation, advises patients to review all hospital and doctor bills after visiting the ER or an in-network hospital.
Even if an out-of-network provider offered you emergency care, they can't charge you more than an in-network provider, including any cost sharing your plan requires.
If your bill is larger than your copay or deductible, you may have been overbilled, Donovan said.
“You should never be billed for emergency services beyond your deductible and copay,” she said.
This information should be on your health insurance card or EOB.
Experts advise calling your insurer if you receive a banned bill.
“If they can't validate a bill and say you shouldn't have received it, call the provider,” Donovan said. If they insist on billing you, call yourself, your provider, and your insurer.
If your insurer and provider won't adjust the bill, file a complaint. You can now report suspicious medical bills to the federal government. Online or at 1-800-985-3059.
Your provider may send your bill to collections. Donovan advised calm. "You're protected."
Donovan said to tell a collections agency if you dispute a medical bill. While confirming your claim, they shouldn't contact you for 30 days.
She warned, "Don't pay anything." "You're accepting responsibility"
Medical bills don't usually appear on credit reports for 180 days. The bill should be fixed by then.
