Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. Big up Colin Hunter for this blazing set!! This is part of a series of DJ Trend sets celebrating the life and achievements of the legendary DJ and producer who sadly passed away on his 32nd birthday, in 2010. Rest In Peace Gifford Noel.
DJ Trend began his career in 1994, on Rinse FM 97.6 and continued to play sets on Rinse's new dial of 91.8FM, in 1997, before making his switch to Kool FM the same year. Trend started producing tracks at the age of 17 with his good friend DJ Target (BBC Radio 1Xtra), calling themselves T.N.T. (TNT). Trend regularly cut his tracks on dub plate and played them on his sets with the SS Crew - (Target, Trend, Wiley (Eskiboy), MC Caspit and MC Breeze (Roll Deep)) on East London's Rinse FM.
His early tracks grabbed the attention of Jungle/DNB industry heads, with releases like "Anthem" (Miditraks, 1997) with the help Music House Studio a dub plate cutting studio, in Holloway Rd. Also producing under the alias Macko - Fade Away / Tune Your Bass (Fury Recordings, 1997).
Trend also gained more success a year after this recording with "Tune Your Bass" and "Flight 747"(Live Recordings, 1998). However, the main focus was the year of 1997 when Trend took the Jungle rave scene by storm with the T.N.T - 2 Degrees - Kartoons label (1997). Nicky Blackmarket the owner of the Kartoons label had discovered the teenage sensation and 2 Degrees was getting the thumbs up by DJs nationwide and MCs were calling for its rewind. 2 Degrees went down a treat at raves like, One Nation, Telepathy, Slammin Vinyl, Jungle Fever, Desire, Heat, Warning, World Dance and many rave nights. It wasn't just a 1997 anthem it was played for many years to come and impact was immense also remixed by Dominator (RIP).
Trend continued to produce track after track and he was beginning to get noticed by the likes of Kool FM 94.5, in east London, who eventually poached him from their rival Rinse FM 91.8. He wasn't the only one to join Kool FM from Rinse, with MC Maxwell D (Pay As You Go Cartel) and DJ Nicky Slim Ting (East Connection) who also recruited.
Wiley, yes the Godfather Grime was a Jungle DJ back in 1995. He firstly went under the name of DJ Wildchild, however, there was another famous female Jungle DJ with the same name who was on the legendary London pirate Kool FM 94.5 (she was also a resident DJ for a top rave night called Thunder & Joy @Raw Club, Great Russell St). A few months later, he changed his name to DJ Wiley and continued to DJ for the remainder of 1995, before switching over to become MC Wiley Kat in 1996. Wiley was multifaceted, he could DJ, MC and produce. Though he changed his name you could understand the reasons for calling himself Wildchild as he was an inner city youth struggling against a system that didn't care. Surprisingly, Wiley decided to briefly become a garage DJ/producer (under alias Phaze One). Little did anyone know what the future held for one east London's finest budding stars. Following those brief stints Wiley formed, The Entourage (precursor for Roll Deep), in 2000 and recorded "Terrible" with Breeze, Bubbles & Flowdan which was later released on Solid City Records in 2001. Then laying down his vocals on "Know We" - Pay As You Go Cartel (PAUG). Splitting up from the PAUG to set up the Roll Deep Entourage (Roll Deep) with Riko, Flow Dan, Danny Weed, Karnage, Trim, Breeze, Scratchy, Brazen, Jet Le and Roachee. Continuing to produce under the alias Eskiboy. Wiley took the music scene by storm and was one of the pioneers of Grime music, even being honoured the title by the scene as the "Godfather of Grime".
