As the pandemic exacerbates Canada's surgery backlogs, some patients are taking their health into their own hands, traveling thousands of kilometres and paying big bucks for medical procedures.
It's easy to see why: in 2021, Canadians faced a median wait time of just over 25 weeks between referral and receiving treatment. That's the longest wait time ever recorded by the Fraser Institute, and a 175 per cent increase from 1993, when the average wait was just nine weeks.
Jamie Mauracher looks at how some Canadians bypassed the long waits, and why they say their health system is failing them.
