Despite victories in the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, Thunder Gulch entered the Kentucky Derby as a 24-1 underdog. He was the least respected of trainer D. Wayne Lukas's three-pronged attack, which also included the reigning 2-year-old champion Timber Country and future Hall of Famer Serena's Song. That didn't stop him from taking home the roses. Stablemate Timber Country took the Preakness, but missed the Belmont. Finally, it was Thunder Gulch's turn at favoritism. He didn't disappoint, giving trainer Lukas his fourth straight win in a Triple Crown race and second consecutive Belmont.
