On Monday, Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, asked that “everyone rethink their Thanksgiving plans” amid the second wave of the coronavirus, saying it is best to think about “restricting contact as much as possible.”
“Keeping apart at a holiday isn’t what anyone wants to do,” de Villa said at the city’s COVID-19 update, adding that “being apart doesn’t have to mean being alone if you think it through.”
Toronto’s top doctor stated that Thanksgiving dinners should be limited to those within the same household, or be held virtually.
“I would far rather we change one Thanksgiving for safety’s sake, than look back at Thanksgiving 2020 with enormous regret,” she told reporters.
Ontario reported 615 cases of the novel coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 54,814. Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter that “there are 289 new cases in Toronto, 88 in Peel and 81 in Ottawa.”
