Filmed just months after the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre, this episode features Columbine student Brooks Brown, close friend of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two perpetrators, who shares with Oprah his harrowing experiences before, during and after the massacre. Brooks recounts his experiences from initially being a key witness, i.e. on the day of the massacre, when Brooks encountered Eric Harris arriving at Columbine High School, Harris told him "Brooks, I like you now. Get out of here. Go home", to being named a "potential suspect" by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Also featured are Brooks parents, Randy and Judy, and his younger brother, Aaron. Randy and Judy share with Oprah their frustrations at the failures of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to act on reports they made months and years before the massacre regarding the increasingly alarming and dangerous behavior of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.
In addition both Brooks and his parents relate to Oprah their experiences with Dylan Klebold, a close family friend whose actions on April 20, 1999 shocked them beyond belief and comprehension.
Following Columbine, both Brooks and his father have since published books detailing their experiences and sharing their insights into how and why the Columbine massacre happened. Links to both books below.
