Should Ethiopia build its dam? Is it truly for the greater good of Africa?
From enabling agriculture in otherwise infertile lands to acting as a major transport route, tourist attraction, and source of freshwater, the River Nile isn’t just an asset to Africa- it’s the continent’s lifeline.
And with hundreds of millions of Africans depending so heavily on this river’s steady flow, it should come as no surprise that Ethiopia’s construction of a dam across one of the Nile’s 3 main tributaries- has sparked a flame of regional and international concern.
The Grand Renaissance Ethiopian dam, otherwise known as the GERD, has been described as an “existential threat” to downstream African nations, due to the fact that filling its reservoir could restrict the flow of the Nile- leading to water shortages in countries like Egypt and Sudan.
These beliefs, however, have been met with strict opposition, with many claiming the GERD will be Africa’s ticket out of poverty, and that Ethiopia has every right to construct whatever it pleases on its soil.
Let’s take a look at where these opinions and accusations are coming from, and whether they have any footing, in the form of a little debate ;)
