(15 Nov 2017) US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would work "as fast as possible" to eliminate sizable trade deficits with US trading partners.
Trump said that a key goal of his just-concluded Asia trip was to insist on fair and reciprocal trade.
He said it was "unacceptable" that the US trade deficit with other nations stands at about 800 billion US dollars a year.
Trump said, "We are going to start whittling that down as fast as possible."
He did not say how he planned to achieve that goal.
Trump was recapping what he said were the successes of his nearly two-week trip to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Trump also paused his address to the nation to take a swig of water — twice.
Trump first reached into the lectern to seek water and required help from others in the room to spot a bottle on a nearby table.
He took another drink a few minutes later.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump frequently mocked then-rival Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's frequent water breaks.
Reporters at the White House also asked Trump Wednesday whether Republican Roy Moore should drop out of the Alabama Senate race following accusations of sexual misconduct.
Trump walked off without answering any questions.
