Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians he has under his thumb. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.
Under the direction of Ruben Fleischer, "Gangster Squad" is a stylish retelling of events surrounding the LAPD's efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. The film stars Oscar® nominees Josh Brolin ("Milk," "True Grit") and Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson," "Drive"), and Academy Award® winner Sean Penn ("Milk," "Mystic River") as Mickey Cohen. The film also stars Oscar® nominee Nick Nolte ("Warrior," "Affliction"), Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Robert Patrick and Mireille Enos.
The screenplay was written by Will Beall, based on the book Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman. The film is produced by Dan Lin, Kevin McCormick and Michael Tadross. The executive producers are Ruben Fleischer, Paul Lieberman and Bruce Berman.
Fleischer was joined behind the scenes by his regular collaborators, production designer Maher Ahmad and editor Alan Baumgarten, as well as editor James Herbert, Academy Award®-winning director of photography Dion Beebe ("Memoirs of a Geisha") and Oscar®-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres ("True Grit"). The film's composer is Steve Jablonsky.
RYAN GOSLING (Sgt. Jerry Wooters) has been honored for his work in a broad range of roles in both acclaimed independent features and major motion pictures. In 2012, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Comedy or Musical, for his role opposite Steve Carell and Emma Stone in "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and another for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama, for his work in George Clooney's "Ides of March." The "Ides of March" cast was also nominated for Best Acting Ensemble by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
That same year, Gosling was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead and a Critics Choice Award for Best Actor for his work in the action drama "Drive," directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. In 2010, he starred opposite Michelle Williams in the romantic drama "Blue Valentine," for which he earned another Golden Globe nomination, and his third Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Actor. He previously received Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® and Critics Choice Award nominations for his work in the title role of the indie film "Lars and the Real Girl." He earned an Academy Award® nomination and won an Independent Spirit Award, both for Best Actor, for his performance in the 2006 release "Half Nelson," which also garnered him nominations for SAG® and Critics Choice Awards, Best Actor awards at the Stockholm and Seattle Film Festivals, and a National Board of Review Award for Best Male Breakthrough Performance.
Gosling made his feature film debut in the 2000 true-life drama "Remember the Titans," starring Denzel Washington. His breakthrough role came the following year, when he starred in the provocative independent drama "The Believer," which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Gosling's portrayal of a virulent anti-Semite who is revealed to be Jewish brought him his first Independent Spirit Award nomination, as well as a London Film Critics' Circle Award nomination and the Best Foreign Actor Award from the Russian Film Critics Guild.
