The Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany is the oldest and largest of its kind in the world. Dating back to the 15th century, the book fair was created soon after Johannes Gutenberg invented his movable type printing press in the nearby town of Mainz. It reigned as the most influential book fair in Europe until the end of the 17th century and regained its importance in 1949 as the first post-War book fair.
Today, the fair is a gigantic event filled with thousands of publishers, agents, distributors and authors. Since 2005, antiquarian booksellers have also been present and it's a truly an international event. Booksellers from all over the world gather to display unique and beautiful books dating back to the 15th century.
At the 2012 antiquarian book fair we saw many rare treasures, including this shoemakers almanac from the 1876. Throughout the book are patterns for different types of shoes and advertisements. This medical text from 1783 boasts illustrations drawn to the same measurements as the original organs, leading edge at the time.
